Measure Diamond Quality: Color

The majority of diamonds appear to have no color, but in fact most diamonds contain slight tones of yellow or brown. The more colorless the diamond the more valuable it is considered. Diamonds are categorized on a color scale that ranges from D (Colorless) to Z (Deeply tinted). Diamonds also come in a broad selection of colors such as red, blue, green and yellow.

Retailers in general use the formal GIA (Gemological Institute Of America) color scale, which is frequently used in the United States to grade the color for both appraisal and pricing strategies.

When shopping for diamonds be aware that some retail shops will use unique descriptions to describe the color of a diamond. Yellow hues can be described as "canary" and brown "hues" can be described as "cognac". Also be aware that the color of a diamond can be either a naturally created color or a "clarity enhanced, color enhancement process" created in the lavatory. Another reason for asking for a formal appraisal upon purchase!
