Measure Diamond Quality: Clarity

Diamond Clarity

Diamonds are a naturally formed substance, although there are more and more synthetic diamonds being created in laboratory processes these days. Natural diamonds are commonly formed with slight imperfections. These imperfections are called “inclusions.” Inclusions can come in many forms such as black dots, feathery cracks, and small white points. The fewer inclusions, the more the diamond is worth. The GIA (Gemological Institute Of America) Clarity Scale ranks a diamonds clarity by the number size, type and position of inclusions. Having your diamond appraised by a qualified appraisal expert will allow you to have a "map" showing the unique physical characteristics of your diamond.

For the most part, diamonds are cleaned and polished by the wholesale supplier, so deficiencies are not as evident to the naked eye. With a certified diamond, they typically chart the cracks on the certificate. This will act as a fingerprint for identifying that particular stone. The same certificate of appraisal in helpful when insuring your diamond, and can be a verification tool for resale purposes.
